To Lake Voulismeni, where is the center of Agios Nikolaos, under the hill that hosts a park with pine trees, lies the Lake Voulismeni. From the park you have a unique panoramic view, while the lake is considered to be an underground river mouth. The beautiful natural environment, with stone paths, walkways and many cafés, bars and restaurants on the lake will fascinate you. Connected to the port, the channel, was created in 1870 and is shelter for many small boats that contribute to the picturesque landscape.
To the historic Spinalonga, the island was used as a leper colony and some buildings are still preserved. The visit is allowed at specific points, while the tour boats start from Elounda and Plaka.
To the town center, as the walk is particularly interesting. The city is built on hills, so the stairs are characteristic of the city.
To the neighboring Ierapetra, just 40 minutes by car, looking at different seas! Ierapetra is a very special city, urban center of southern Crete and is the warmest city in Greece and the southernmost tip of Crete. It has several major attractions, including the Fort Kale and of course it offers access to the Island Chrysi or Gaidouronisi, an island of rare beauty, with white sand, turquoise waters and a large cedar forest which is protected area!
To the Vai palm grove, the largest in Europe, creation of pirates who threw the seeds of dates they were eating, resulting in the development 6000 palm trees! Vai has been declared a protected area with many migratory birds traveling to and from Africa.
To the fourth largest Minoan palace, the ancient palace Zakros. Situated in the last end of Crete closest to the palm forest of Vai, with unique position in antiquity for trade with the East. More hints: The palace dates back to 1900 B.C.
To the many beautiful beaches of Lassithi in Libyan and Cretan sea! Unique beauty you will find in the Plaka beach, overlooking Spinalonga, Amoudara, the Chrysi Akti and of course Vai.
To the windmills in Seli Ampelou, 52 km away from Agios Nikolaos. 24 stone windmills, which are now labeled as works of art.
And finally, for hiking and archeology enthusiasts, Upper Zakros Gorge or the gorge of the Dead. It is a canyon about 5 km, beautiful and full of caves. During the Minoan period, the canyon walls were used as tombs.
